The IKM Emergent will be participating in of the largest Development Studies Conferences in Europe - Rethinking Development in an Age of Scarcity and Uncertainty: New Values, Voices and Alliances for Increased Resilience. The conference is to be held from the 19-22 September 2011, at the University of York. About one thousand development studies researchers, policymakers and practitioners are expected to participate.

Tim Berners-Lee gave the keynote speech at the 2010 ICT & International Development conference in London, including talk of the potential role of open data in development. The details of how open and linked data might impact development were the key theme in the recent IKM workshop I blogged about a few weeks ago, and as a follow up to that workshop, a short discussion paper was available at ICTD, alongside a range of fantastic touchscreen kiosks produced by Ralph Borland.

A mobile call for policy makers
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has called on policy makers to pay greater attention to the possibilities offered by mobile telephone connectivity to help the poor to develop livelihood assets.
The recently published Information Economy Report highlights the importance of mobile telephones in boosting micro-economic activities in the developing part of the world.

Identifying ICTD as unique field of development anchored around a technology IKM stressed the need to look beyond simplistic technology transfer models at ICTD 2009 held in Doha Qatar.
